Current and Annual Projects

  • Fish Passage and River Connectivity Project.  Reconnecting the river in order to maintain a healthy fishery, AsRA has partnered with TNC, SUNY, and USFW to assess habitat connectivity and replace culverts that block small streams.
    Upper Jay Dam Removal.  Assisting the Town of Jay in the deconstruction of a defunct dam; this project will increase the habitat available to Brook Trout.
  • The Ausable River Steward educates anglers, fly shops, and visitor bureau staff aboutCheck, Clean, Dryin order to help stop the spread of Didymo and other river specific aquatic invasive species and pathogens.
  • Watershed Management Planning for the Ausable River Watershed a project to prioritize opportunities for improvement within each segment of the 512 square miles of the Ausable Watershed.
  • Ausable Community Paddling Program and Nature Trail on Lake Everest.  A low cost canoe rental and paddling trail supported by the community of Wilmington.
  • Water Quality Monitoring and Temperature.  Studies indicate the Ausable has good water quality, but improvements are needed.  AsRA forges partnerships to enact water quality protection measures.
  • Ausable River Restoration. Restoring the River to its natural condition using geomorphic techniques.
  • Trees for Trout! Riparian Buffer Planting.  Each year AsRA volunteers plant trees as part of a program to protect stream banks and shade the river.  Over the past three years over 3,000 trees have been planted.
  • River clean up, AsRA volunteers keep the riverbanks clean and free of trash.  2011 clean-ups include Ausable Forks, Keeseville, and Jay Bridge.
  • Invasive species mapping and eradication Preserving the natural areas through biocontrol of invasive plants.  Increasing the awareness of Cup Plant, an invasive along the East Branch, in partnership with the Master Gardeners of the Ausable.
  • Native Plant Sale.  Provides gardeners with alternatives to invasive plants that could harm the river system. 
  • Seasonal Sanitary Facilities.  AsRA partners with Anglers, Bikers, Triathletes and farms to provide facilities that keep the riverbanks clean and scenic. 
  • Wild River Displays.  Writing text for interpretive displays at Ausable Chasm and the Adirondack Museum.
