The Ausable River Association (AsRA) has long recognized the importance and need for reducing sediment runoff to the river. AsRA works cooperatively with landowners to plant trees and construct streambank restoration projects. A survey of stream
condition, bank erosion and bank height was conducted by AsRA
volunteers on the East Branch in 2005 and on the West and Main
Branches in 2006
(view map). Detailed information gathered by volunteers on the East Branch includes land use, land cover, invasive species, erosion indicators, features affecting stream flow, and the length of pools, riffles, runs, and bends. Slide show
Trees for Trout!
Trees are extremely important for stabilizing
stream banks, keeping pollutants and sediment out of the river, and
providing shade to cool the water. Good tree cover contributes to good
trout habitat! Each year the Ausable River Association helps a
riverfront landowner restore natural vegetation to a stream bank. Pictures of tree planting.
