Stormwater Runoff Control

The Ausable River Association (AsRA) has long recognized the importance and need for keeping sediment and other pollutants from reaching the river.  The Association works cooperatively with government agencies to put into place practices that will help minimize stormwater runoff.  AsRA has advocated for Vortechnic Units that clean stormwater before it enters the river.  Examples include the Contech Units at Whietface Mountain Ski Center, and a Vortbox at the Route 86 Bridge in Wilmington.

In 2006, AsRA conducted a study to determine the extent of stormwater controls in the watershed (Stormwater GAP Analysis) and provided local governments with sample stormwater ordinance.

Road Salt

Studies conducted within the Ausable Watershed show that salt from winter road maintenance has heavily impacted lakes and streams in the Adirondack Park.  AsRA has partnered with other NGO's in the Park to bring change to winter road maintenance practices by state and local road crews.
