River & Watershed - Watershed Planning

Ausable River | Watershed | Wildlife | History

AsRA is currently writing a Watershed Management Plan for the Ausable Watershed (summary of progress to date).  This will revise and update the Ausable River Study.  The planning process involves gathering public input, summarizing existing data about the natural and cultural resources of the Ausable River, and making a list of priority projects. The Ausable Watershed Strategy is complete and is the first step in completing a Plan.  Further informatin about water quality, pollutant sources, priority subwatersheds, and local laws is currently being gathered.

A watershed is a useful land delineation to use in planning because water does not stop at village, town, or county boundaries.  We all live upstream of somebody and downstream of somebody else.  We all share the water. The water in the Ausable Watershed is shared by 7 towns, 2 villages, 7 hamlets, and 2 counties.  The Ausable River and its watershed are a jewel of the Adirondacks so we need a plan to protect it!

Watershed Management Planning starts with the public.  Implementation items in the plan come from ideas that citizens of the watershed express during Public Input meetings.  All aspects of planning have been guided by an  Advisory Committee
